The shoe Marcello made first.
He spent twenty years behind a counter watching men buy a shoe they had to sit down to put on, wear it twice, and go back to the pair they could step into. So the first thing he made was the pair you step into.
There is no lace, no buckle, no hardware anywhere on it. The upper is a single piece of sheepskin suede with a moccasin seam across the toe, and nothing behind it. No lining, no stiffener, no shank. That is why it folds at the ball of the foot from the first hour instead of the third week, and why it weighs about as much as a sock.
The sole is light rubber with a cream edge. It is quiet on stone, it grips wet pavement, and it stops the shoe from reading formal, which is the whole trick: this is a shoe that goes with linen shorts in July and with dark wool trousers in October without looking like it changed its mind.
Nine colours, all from the same card, none of which get discontinued next spring.

How to wear it
Bare ankle from May to September. A fine merino sock the rest of the year. Marcello has never put a thick sock in one and would rather you did not either.
On sizing
It runs true to size for most feet. If you are between sizes, or if the shoe you wear most is a narrow lace-up, take the smaller one. Unlined suede gives with wear; the sole does not.
Care
Brush the nap back with a suede brush when it flattens. Let mud dry before you touch it, then brush it off. Keep a cedar tree in them between wears: an unlined shoe has nothing else holding its shape.
